TOILET SEAT GUIDES · MEASUREMENTS

How to measure a toilet for a replacement seat

Take three useful measurements, compare the product specifications and still identify the toilet outline.

Measurements help compare a possible replacement and rule out obvious size mismatches. They do not identify the bowl’s brand, range or outline by themselves: two toilets can have similar length and width but different curves, contact points and fixings. If the model is uncertain, request Sintesibagno toilet-seat identification before ordering.

Prepare the toilet and tape measure

Use a flexible or rigid tape and measure the ceramic, not a warped old seat. If the seat is still fitted, lift it and locate the two fixing holes. Record measurements in millimetres and take a top-down photo with a reference visible.

1. Length

Measure along the bowl’s centre line from the centre of the fixing line to the front edge of the ceramic. Some sellers instead list the seat’s overall length. Check which convention the product page uses; do not guess how much to add or subtract at the back.

2. Maximum width

Measure the bowl at its widest point, from outside edge to outside edge, in a straight line perpendicular to the centre line. Do not measure around the curve or choose a narrower, easier-to-reach point.

3. Fixing-hole spacing

Measure horizontally between the centres of the two holes, not from edge to edge. If hinge pins cover the holes, find the centre of each pin. Check whether the replacement allows adjustment and the stated range; do not assume a near match can be corrected by forcing the fittings.

Other details to record

Photograph the rear profile, sloping surfaces, front shape and whether fittings mount from above or below. Note the clearance between bowl, cistern and wall. These details help establish whether the seat can open and rest correctly. The Tesi and Conca guides show examples of ranges with distinctive requirements.

For examples of available replacements for identified ranges, see the dedicated Ideal Standard Tesi seat and dedicated Ideal Standard Conca seat. Confirm the bowl version before ordering.

Common measuring mistakes

  • measuring the old seat instead of the ceramic;
  • taking width at the wrong point;
  • measuring hole spacing edge-to-edge instead of centre-to-centre;
  • comparing overall seat length with a measurement from the fixing holes;
  • choosing by similar numbers without checking the outline.

Compare your notes with a replacement listing for the exact range. Measurements help narrow the search but do not replace model identification.
