Hard-to-find toilet seats: replacements for discontinued toilets

A discontinued toilet seat may seem impossible to find. Start with the toilet brand, range, outline and fixings to locate the right replacement...

When a seat breaks on an older toilet, finding a hard-to-find toilet seat can feel impossible: the range has been discontinued, the original part is no longer listed, or the bowl has an unusual outline. Often, “hard to find” means the exact toilet must be identified before looking for a seat designed for its shape.

A similar length or a close-looking outline is not enough. The profile, width, hinge position and fixing centres all affect whether a seat sits correctly.

Why are some replacement seats difficult to find?

Bathroom manufacturers have made many toilet shapes over the years, including square, rounded, asymmetrical and sculpted designs. When a range is discontinued, its original seat may also disappear from production. Older toilets can have non-standard dimensions, less common colours or fittings unlike current models.

Some original seats remain available; other ranges have dedicated replacements made for a specific bowl. Availability can change, so check the exact toilet and current replacement before assuming there is no solution.

Examples of once hard-to-find models

Replacement seats can be difficult to source for models such as EGO by Kerasan and OH by Simas. These examples show why a universal seat that looks close may not be enough: the seat must match the bowl outline and fixing arrangement.

Older ranges such as ITALICA by Pozzi Ginori and LAGO by Dolomite also illustrate how a discontinued toilet may need a seat with specific dimensions or a distinctive profile. Always identify the exact version; names and configurations can vary.

Original, dedicated or compatible?

An original replacement is supplied as a component of the toilet brand. A dedicated seat is designed for a particular range or bowl but may be made by another manufacturer. “Compatible” means it is intended to fit that toilet, but the label alone does not prove that its outline and hinges match.

Dedicated does not mean universal. Check that the product listing names the exact range and version, and compare the outline, dimensions, hinges and mounting method. Also confirm material, colour, soft-close and quick-release features.

How to search for a discontinued toilet seat

  1. Identify the brand and range. Look for marks or codes on the ceramic, existing seat or hinges, and keep any bathroom paperwork.
  2. Photograph the full outline. Take clear top and side views, including the back, front edge and support points.
  3. Record useful measurements. Measure from fixing centres to the front edge, maximum width and the distance between fixing-hole centres.
  4. Check the hinges. Note their shape, direction and access; some seats mount from above, others from below.
  5. Compare the replacement listing. Compatibility should specify the correct range and version, not just a similar length.

Photos and measurements narrow the search but may not identify the toilet with certainty. If the brand or range is unclear, ask for identification before ordering instead of choosing by appearance alone.

Will a universal seat work?

An adjustable seat may suit some standard toilets, but it is not an automatic solution for older or unusual bowls. It may overhang, leave part of the rim uncovered or miss the fixings. For a distinctive shape or uncommon size, start with a seat listed for that exact range.

Frequently asked questions

Does discontinued mean there are no replacement seats?

No. The original part may be discontinued while a dedicated or compatible replacement is still available. Check the exact range and version.

Can I choose a seat using measurements alone?

No. Measurements do not fully describe the outline, supports or hinges. Seats with similar dimensions may not be interchangeable.

What should I send for identification?

Clear top and side photos, close-ups of the fixings, any visible brand or code, and the main measurements. Ask for a check before ordering if anything remains uncertain.
