Philippe Starck designed several bathroom collections, but replacing a toilet seat starts with the exact range. Duravit STARCK 1, STARCK 2 and STARCK 3 are not interchangeable versions of one seat: their outlines, proportions and fittings differ. Two bowls that look similar may still need different replacements.
This guide explains the main clues to check, and how to compare original and dedicated replacement seats. Measurements are useful for identification, but do not prove compatibility by themselves.
Philippe Starck and Duravit
The collaboration produced several collections with distinct shapes. The designer’s name is not always enough to identify the replacement. Look for the Duravit range name, the bowl version, and whether it is floor-standing or wall-hung. A more specific search such as “Duravit Starck 3 toilet seat” is more useful than “Philippe Starck toilet seat”.
Starck 1: a broad circular outline
STARCK 1 is notable for its strongly circular shape. A width of around 42 cm has been reported for the bowl, making it unusually broad compared with many oval toilets. Do not select a universal seat just because it looks round or has a similar length. The seat must follow the ceramic rim without obvious gaps or overhang, and the hinge positions must match.
Check the bowl version, width, length and fixing centres. Photos from above and the side can help, but confirm the range before ordering.
Starck 2: D-shaped profile and concealed fittings
STARCK 2 has a more compact, often D-shaped outline and distinctive details at the rear. Its closed sides and concealed fittings create a clean appearance. On many modern wall-hung toilets, the seat is fixed from above because the underside is inaccessible. Do not infer the hinge type from the range name alone: inspect the existing fittings and the replacement specifications.
Starck 3: check fixing centres and bowl depth
STARCK 3 was made in floor-standing and wall-hung versions and in different projections, commonly listed as 48 and 54 cm. A fixing-centre distance of about 27 cm is reported for one Starck 3 configuration. This is wider than on many standard bowls, so check the distance between hole centres before ordering. Confirm the bowl version as well as length, width, rear shape and fixing method.
Original or dedicated replacement?
An original seat is sold as the matching Duravit component. A dedicated seat is made to fit a specified bowl or range but is not the toilet maker’s original part. Compare the exact range and version, outline, hinges, material, colour and features such as soft-close or quick release. “Dedicated” does not mean universal; it still needs to match the intended model.
- Original: check the stated range, bowl version, hinges and closing mechanism.
- Dedicated: make sure the listing names Starck 1, 2 or 3 rather than simply “Duravit”.
- Either option: verify material, finish, colour and fitting details before purchase.
How to identify the correct seat
- Look for the model code or markings on the toilet and any paperwork.
- Compare the outline: Starck 1 is circular, Starck 2 is closer to a D shape, while Starck 3 has a simpler profile.
- Record whether the bowl is wall-hung or floor-standing and its projection.
- Measure length, maximum width and fixing centres from hole centre to hole centre.
- Check whether the hinges are fitted from above or below and whether they can be adjusted.
- Match the replacement listing to the exact range and version.
Measurements can rule out an unsuitable seat, but may not identify a toilet on their own. If unsure, collect clear top and side photos, pictures of the hinges and any markings, and request identification before buying.
Colour, material and features
Older ceramics may have colours that differ from today’s standard white. Compare the seat colour with the bowl in natural light and check the seller’s exact colour description. Thermoset, coated wood and other materials differ in feel, weight and care. Soft-close, metal hinges and quick release are also version-specific features; do not assume they match the seat already installed.
Frequently asked questions
Do Starck 1, 2 and 3 share one seat?
No. Their outlines and fittings differ. Select a seat for the exact range and bowl version.
Is Starck 1 wider than a standard toilet?
It has a broad circular outline; a width of around 42 cm is reported for some versions. Check your bowl and the replacement specification.
What does 27 cm fixing distance mean for Starck 3?
It is the centre-to-centre distance between the hinge holes reported for one configuration. Measure your own bowl before ordering.
Is a dedicated seat an original Duravit part?
No. “Dedicated” describes intended fit; “original” means sold as the maker’s own replacement component.
